New associations

William Eggers, who recently retired as general counsel at Corning Incorporated, has returned to Nixon Peabody as senior counsel in the litigation practice. Eggers previously practiced at Nixon Peabody before going in-house. While at Corning, he was closely involved with successfully defending securities litigation and ERISA litigation, and also oversaw a variety of transactions, as well as corporate governance and securities matters.

Marc Gary was recently named general counsel at Fidelity Investments in Boston, the largest mutual fund company in the U.S. Gary is the former general counsel at BellSouth Corp., which merged with AT&T in December 2006. Gary will oversee a legal department that has more than 200 employees.

Lance B. Levy has been appointed general counsel at Open Pages, a corporate governance software company based in Waltham, Mass. He was previously general counsel at Imagitas, Inc.

Stephanie Lovell has joined Boston Medical Center as vice president and general counsel. Lovell most recently served in the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office for more than six years, including three years as second-in-command as first assistant Attorney General.

Hiram N. Pan recently became general counsel at Whittier Health Network in Haverhill, Mass. Whittier Health Network is a family-owned acute rehabilitative care organization.

Lon F. Povich was recently named senior vice president and general counsel at BJ’s Wholesale Club based in Natick, Mass. He previously was general counsel of The Boston Consulting Group, Inc., a management consulting firm in Boston.

Scott Semel recently became chief legal officer at Teleatlas, a
digital map data company.

Steven D. Weatherhead recently joined Bello Black & Walsh in Boston. He previously served as general counsel at Salary.com, a compensation software
company based in Waltham, Mass.

New promotions

Maine-based TD Banknorth Inc. recently tapped John R. Opperman as its general counsel. Opperman has been with TD Banknorth’s legal department since 1998, most recently as deputy general counsel. In his new role, he will serve as chief legal officer for the holding company, TD Banknorth, N.A., as well as the bank.
He is a Maine advisory member of the New England Legal Foundation. Opperman also serves on the board of editors of New England In-House.
